Match Report
Dunton Dynamos 1 - 3 Mornington Boys
Cup Final - 26th April 2009; Conditions: Glorious spring afternoon
What a fabulous afternoon! Dynamos did themselves and their families proud with a terrific performance against the runaway league winners in the League cup final this afternoon at Burroughs Park stadium.
Even though the team
did not win the cup, their performance was outstanding and they fully
deserved the accolades afterwards from all who were present on this special
day.
Thanks to Paul and Corinne, players and families enjoyed a relaxing, trouble free coach trip to the game and, with the squad looking very smart in their team polo shirts, it was clear that this was going to be a day to remember.
Dynamos started impressively from the first whistle and Mornington soon realised that they were in for a tough afternoon. AJ was a constant threat latching onto balls from Kieran, Oscar, Jack and Joe Thorpe. Joe Williams ran his heart out up front to keep Mornington’s defence and ‘keeper on their toes throughout. Joe Thorpe went close with an audacious lob, but it was the league leaders who scored a very lucky goal when the ball was crossed into the danger area and then bundled over the line in the six yard box. 0-1 - 20 minutes gone.
In fairness to Mornington,
Dynamos had a fortunate moment just a few minutes earlier when the ball
crashed against the bar from 10 yards and soon after the goal, the same
thing happened again. Ross made an impressive save from close distance,
and the Mornington striker repeated his effort as the woodwork prevented
the second goal.
AJ then powered on goal at the other end with a run and shot from outside the penalty area, but the ball went frustratingly wide of the post.
Jack then tried his luck with an up and under, which caused the ‘keeper some problems. The action swung to the other end and again Ross made a fine save from a shoot from distance as Dynamos were battling all over the pitch, never giving Mornington a moments rest.
Just when it looked
as if Dynamos were going into the half time trailing by a solitary goal,
a defensive mix up allowed Mornington to scramble a fortunate second goal
from only a yard out. It was very hard luck on Dynamos in the light of
their first half performance. 0-2.
Immediately after the restart, Dynamos conceded another scrappy goal, when the defence did not clear effectively. In previous encounters, the team would have possibly conceded more goals as confidence would have suffered, but Mornington were not to score again in this fascinating encounter.
Instead, Dynamos
raised their game. Kieran shot from the edge of the box, but it was deflected
for a corner. AJ linked well with Kieran, Jack and Jake, but his shot
also went wide.
The Dynamos powered on throughout the rest of the half; Joe Williams and Jake continued to pester the Mornington defence, Sam came on to bolster the midfield, Robert, Harry, Jonathan and Adam held firm at the back and pushed on to support Curtis and the midfield with real determination, chasing every lost cause. It was a magnificent effort which was rewarded with a goal when AJ pressurised the Mornington defence into scoring into their own net. 1-3. In the final minute, Joe Williams was unlucky in chasing down the defence with one last effort before the referee blew his whistle to end the match.
It was a marvellous match, which Mornington won, but Dynamos were also covered in glory for all of their efforts on this memorable day.
